Sufficiently Advanced

Author’s Comments:

Clarke’s third law: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Or, as Leigh Brackett put it, “Witchcraft to the ignorant… Simple science to the learned.”

Our favorite student witch, Hermione Granger, suspects there may be a deeper understanding to the spells she is learning, and that if she could just get a handle on scientific method, she might better understand the why behind the magic she is driven to excel at. Too bad they teach little more than Astronomy for the sciences at Hogwarts.

Now, if only she had someone to tutor her in the sciences; maybe somebody like that Vulcan Science Officer from that television show…

Sufficiently Advanced is, admittedly, a combined Star Trek AU and Harry Potter AU fanfic. The fun part is, the Alternate Universe that a certain Vulcan is from in this story is—gulp!—ours! (Please note that this is chapter one, presented as a formated mini eBook [Adobe PDF].)

Also, as I intend to post on facebook, it might be “dangerous” for the guy who was generally known as Phaser in high school to be posting a Star Trek fanfic. What can I say? I’m exploring my core values! (But please, please don’t pidgeonhole me as exclusively Trek. While I like Star Trek as much as the next guy, or maybe just a wee bit more, I have many interests.)

  1. I enjoyed this, despite the fact that the conversation was pretty much over my head. I could really hear Spock and Snape in the dialogue. Sexual tension between Hermione and Spock…yeah, didn’t see that coming.

  2. Great fun! Love the Snape-Spock meeting. Your comment about facebook here made me laugh too. Thanks for sharing this.

    • I’m dating myself. (I hate that, I’m such a cheap date!) I started out 9th grade in 1974 when hits like “Time In a Bottle” and “The Air That I Breathe” were getting a lot of airplay. The fact that those are the songs that were meaningful to me says a little bit about the kid I was then; a hopeless romantic, but too much the “brainy type” and with too many insecurities to get a girl.

I designed a working Star Trek phaser that year. Yeah. Like that wouldn’t get me a nickname. There are still a few people in this world that don’t know me by any other name than Phaser.
